And goes out into the world.

And he's always having such a lot of fun.

A lot of fun!

German Government Advises Public To Stop Using IE

(Translated from this page; The BSI is Germany's IT security agency)

Critical Security holes in Internet Explorer

BSI recommends temporary use of alternative browsers

Bonn, 15/1/2010

There exists in Internet Explorer a hitherto unknown security hole. The vulnerability allows attackers to insert and execute malicious code in a Windows computer through a manipulated website. The attacks revealed in the past week on Google and other US businesses probably used these security holes.

Versions 6, 7 and 8 of Internet Explorer on Windows XP, Vista and 7 are affected. Microsoft has published a security advisory outlining ways to minimise the risk, and they are currently working on a patch to close the hole. The BSI anticipates that this vulnerability will soon be used in attacks on the internet.

Using Internet Explorer in "Safe Mode" and turning off Active Scripting reduces the likelihood of attacks but cannot completely prevent them. Therefore, the BSI recommends using an alternative browser until a Microsoft has issued a patch.

As soon as the security hole has been closed, the BSI will make an announcement through its warning and information service Bürger-CERT. The BSI issues information and warnings to [German] citizens and SMEs about viruses, worms and security holes in computer applications. The experts at BSI analyse the internet security situation around the clock and distribute warnings and security advisories by email.

[Still got it :)]

Ay, caramba

From an article by Ireland's favourite titian Cassandra:

As inflation took hold in Spain, those Spanish manufacturers who had still managed to trade found themselves becoming increasingly uncompetitive. Having been the richest nation in Europe, Spain experienced successive financial crises as it tried to pay for its gold-inspired extravagance.

Ireland is in the same position now: small manufacturing can’t compete with our neighbours, particularly as Britain and the US are – logically – allowing their currencies to fall in the face of the new realities. We have decided to tie our currency to countries that are virtuous savers like Germany, while we are delinquent spenders. This makes no sense but, like the emperor with no clothes, no one in the Irish establishment is prepared to admit this fundamental financial folly. In the end, silly policies don’t hold.

Back in the 16th century, the Spanish tried to keep afloat, but they ran out of gold, as we will run out of credit. Ultimately, the Spanish Crown defaulted on its loans in 1557 and further defaults occurred in 1575, 1596,1607,1627, and 1647, leading to serious crises in major financial centres such as Antwerp, Genoa and Lyons, since they had been the prime financiers of the Spanish loans.

The same is likely to happen in the next decade as the US, Britain and of course Ireland realise that they can’t pay all the money back that they borrowed in the good times. Britain and the US are likely to try to generate inflation or seek some debt renegotiation either officially or by stealth.

Ireland, is locked into the euro, so we won’t experience inflation and, therefore, are likely to default on mortgages, credit card bills and other loans.

It feels very strange that a precise date I've been anticipating for over a decade is almost here.

To mark the occasion, I think I will have to contrive some way of queueing 2010 to play extremely loudly at approximately 2009-12-31 23:58:23.

Happy New Year, people. I hope you all (especially those of you living in the Banana Republic of Ireland) make it through intact.
<Photo 2>
