The lure of simplicity - 01/09/2008 - 11:26 GMT - [Link]

We love this stuff. It isn't done to us, we invite it, and we buy it, because we want to live in a simple universe of rules with justice, easy answers and predictable consequences. We want pills to solve complex social problems like school performance. We want berries to stop us from dying and to delineate the difference between us and the lumpen peasants around us. We want nice simple stories that make sense of the world.

From my new hero: Ben Goldacre.

As of this morning, I have six browsers. And I couldn't be arsed with Opera.

Top: Desktop, My Computer, Outlook, Firefox 3, Notepad++, Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8, Photoshop CS3, Eclipse, WinSCP, PuTTY, WMP11, Google Earth

Bottom: Thunderbird, Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 6 (Eolas), Windows internet settings, Safari, Google Chrome, Miranda IM, RegCleaner, XAMPP Control Panel, Picasa, uTorrent, BIDS (PP application)

I posted this from Chrome. It's nice.

How was my drive this morning?

And why?

Mal and Davida, this puts our rained-out wedding to shame.

I've modified the script that shows my Google Reader shared items feed to pick up my Youtube favourites too. Obviously it went and got every single one of them on the first load but it should settle down after this. Next stage: make a feed out the two combined feeds.

It's my last week in Paddy Power. I'm moving to a little software company in Newbridge, five minutes from home. I won't miss the commute.

...you've done it again.

Also: COLBERT: The idea that Lehman Brothers doesn't get any money and AIG does reminds me very much of "Iran is a mortal enemy because they have not achieved a nuclear weapon. But North Korea is a country we can work with, because they have a nuclear weapon." The idea is, Get big or go home. How big can you f--- up? Can you f--- up so bad that you would ruin the world economy? If it's just 15,000 who are out of jobs, no. You have to actually be a global f---up to get any help.

About

This is LeSinge.org v3.0. It's on its sixth* server since I registered the domain name in November of 2000 and it has gone through several drastic facelifts in that time, usually prompted by some cataclysmic event like someone deleting a load of files they shouldn't, or a server being shut down. This is the maddest layout yet; I'm trying to fit the entire weblog (apart from diary archives and the gallery) into a single loading page using all sorts of PHP-generated DHTML jiggery-pokery. The idea is to make it more inviting to look around since there's no loading between "pages". It's still a work in progress (more a proof of concept than anything), so be patient!

I'm Dave Whyte, an Irish CS graduate, German speaker, linguist and incredibly talented web developer. I'm originally from Fermoy but I now live in Newbridge with my wife Beth and our son. I'm currently working for these fine folks and enjoying it greatly.

"The Monkey"? Eh?

My nom de guerre comes from an old Eddie Izzard comedy sketch. I also like Calvin & Hobbes. I've cobbled together a searchable archive of the strips.
